Bar & Bat Mitzvah Class - Sofer STaM
Our class this week featured a special visit from Azriel, a Sofer STaM (a Jewish scribe who writes Torah scrolls, mezuzot and tefillin).
Azriel introduced the students to the fascinating world of Jewish scribal tradition. He showed them what tefillin look like on the inside, how the parchment inside a mezuzah is written, and challenged them to identify mistakes in non-kosher Mezuzot. He also brought a Torah scroll belonging to our community, which was recently found to contain several errors and explained how such mistakes are identified and repaired.
The class also explored the meaning behind the shapes of the Hebrew letters, including ideas and gematria connected to the letters that make up Hashem’s Name and learned about the precision and care required when writing sacred texts.
To finish, Azriel wrote each student’s Hebrew name in authentic STaM script, giving everyone a very special keepsake from the lesson.

This week we celebrate an exciting new chapter for our very own Jake de Jong.
After a year and a half as a madrich in Bnei Akiva and being an integral part of our community, Jake has made Aliyah to Israel. He arrived on Sunday and was warmly welcomed at the airport by Rabbi Netanel and Avital. He will now begin ulpan to learn Hebrew before enlisting in the IDF.
Jake has been a dedicated and dependable madrich whose positive energy and constant smile made a real impact on our chanichim and on everyone who had the pleasure of working with him.
We are incredibly proud of him and wish him every success on this journey. We know Israel is gaining a wonderful young man, and we look forward to seeing him again in the future.
