Parashat Va’etchanan
Bar & Bat Mitzvah Class - Tisha B’Av
This week, we learned about Tisha B’Av (the 9th of Av, a fast day we observe this week) and why it is such an important day in the Jewish calendar.
We started with a short play about Kamtza and Bar Kamtza, and talked about how the destruction of the Temple is connected to sinat chinam (baseless hatred). Through a couple of teamwork challenges, we explored how much easier things are when we support each other, and what can happen when people don’t.
We also learned about the customs of Tisha B’Av, why we fast and the different ways Jews remember and mourn important events and people.
After the break, we played a memory game that led into a discussion about memory in Judaism. We spoke about why some stories are passed down from generation to generation, and how traditions like Shivah, Kaddish, and Yizkor help us remember the people and events that matter most.
Wishing you all Shabbat Shalom,
Ariel, Roni, Tomer and Arbel HaCohen :)
